HONORABLE MENTION - Studio 29 by R. Lee Miller
I chose to make a studio for a photographer. Most of the 16x16x16 cube will be made of formed concrete, with the exception of the “IRIS” wall. I have a single 8” tube that will support the span of 16’ between the front and rear walls. The “IRIS” wall will be a curtain wall of sorts made from LCD curtain glass that changes from opaque to clear with the flip of a switch. With this technology the photographer in the main studio can control the amount of ambient light that comes in via the iris shaped series of glass plates. Each can be turned off and on individually for very fine tuning. There would be a structural member on the studio side of the wall that would hold the curtain wall up (see sketches). To alleviate the shadows made from said structure, I would implement a veil to diffuse the light further. In the tiny 12 feet of space that is the main studio, I have added a small rolled corner so that in if the photographer shoots against the wall, there will be no corners in the shot. The main goal of this studio is to use natural light. Of course all the “IRIS” curtains could be turned opaque and traditional flash equipment could be used if desired.
Also I know that it can be tiring being a perfection seeking photographer. For this reason I added a small loft and bathroom behind the studio. The bathroom has a French style shower of which the toilet can double as a bench. It is all tiled with a floor drain so there is never any mess. Everything is very downscaled and only the bare minimums of civility are incorporated. Above the bathroom, accessible by ladder, is the twin sized loft bed. It has a small window facing the studio and some of the “tree” style windows also filter light in.
Hopefully with the abundance of natural light not much electricity would need to be used for lighting. To further reduce the need for grid power, solar voltaic cells could be added to the roof.
The “tree” style windows would also be LCD curtain windows. I used a green tint in these windows to break up the monotony of the cement, and to fit in more with the wooded surroundings. I have included some vignettes of places in the studio to give you a better idea of how everything goes together. The first floor is the main studio and the second floor is only the loft area.

"We're tired of Republican whining.
Republican Sen. Jim DeMint has left the Transportation Security Administration leaderless by delaying President Barack Obama's nomination for a new director -- while we are under attack. Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz is fighting against the use of full body scanning devices at our airports because he thinks they show too much of the human body. Instead of attacking our president, it would be nice if Republicans would just get out of the way."
